Three Days on Two Wheels: A Motorcycle Adventure Across Romania

This past fall, a friend and I set out on a three-day motorcycle trip through Romania — an unforgettable mix of winding roads, castles, and mountain passes.

I live here in Romania, but my good friend flew in from the United States, eager to explore the country on two wheels. He rented a BMW GSF 650 from Rent4ride.ro, with pickup conveniently located at the Hilton near Otopeni Airport.

I met him at arrivals, having ridden my own Honda X-11 to the airport. The pickup process was quick — maybe ten minutes to check everything and take a few “before” photos — and soon, we were rolling south toward the open road.

Day 1 – Border Roads and the Transfăgărășan Highway

We started the day riding along the Bulgarian border, where quiet roads traced the Danube’s curves. Eventually, we crossed the river by ferry and headed north through Călărași, looping around Bucharest toward Pitești.

From there, the ride turned epic. The legendary Transfăgărășan Highway — often called one of the most beautiful roads in the world — delivered sweeping bends, dramatic cliffs, and endless mountain views.

We ended the day in Râșnov, tired but thrilled. The route was a dream: mostly back roads, with only a short stint on the highway around Bucharest.

Day 2 – Castles of the Carpathians

Day two was dedicated to history and legend. We took a short ride to Peleș Castle, a fairytale masterpiece nestled in the forests of Sinaia. From there, we continued to the famous Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s Castle.

After exploring its medieval halls and scenic courtyards, we cruised back to Râșnov for another night. A shorter riding day, but full of stunning sights and Romanian charm.

Day 3 – The Transalpina & The Journey Home

Our final day was the grand finale: the Transalpina Highway, Romania’s highest road and one of Europe’s most breathtaking rides. The sweeping curves and high-altitude views made every kilometer unforgettable.

We passed again through Pitești and rolled into Bucharest in the early evening, just in time to return the rental bike at the Hilton.

That night, we relaxed, traded stories, and thought of where our next adventure should take us — the perfect ending to an incredible three-day adventure.

The next morning, my friend flew back to the United States, and I rode home with a heart full of memories and gratitude for Romania’s spectacular roads.

Next Adventure: Bucharest to Greece and Back

Plans are already in motion for next year — a five-day ride from Bucharest through Greece and back. If it’s anything like this trip, it’s sure to be another unforgettable journey.
